Following are some of the topics I cover in my classes:

JAZZ IMPROVISATION

A general overview designed to simplify and demystify many of the processes involved in Jazz improvisation. Many basic musical techniques and philosophies are outlined to aid in the stylistic development of each student. This seminar deals with creative approaches to practice, specifically targeted to aid in the growth of the improvising musician, with emphasis on the reliance of the ear to enhance productivity. It also covers melodic and harmonic schemes from chord substitutions to voice leading, as well as practical tools and phrases that are immediately useful for any player at any stage of development.

1. GUITAR SOLO

This workshop is focused on playing musically, using the full range of the instrument and its capabilities, while opening up the creative potential of each musician. All of the subjects entailed have multi-usage potential well beyond the scope of playing in a solo setting. The ability to orchestrate and to find and respond to one's inner ear is the cornerstone of this approach, showing that the freedom of playing alone allows the developing improviser an opportunity to explore the deepest regions of the guitar's expressive elements.

2. GUITAR WITH ACOMPANIMENT

This clinic deals with the unique setting of the guitar in a duo (second guitar or bass) or as a trio (guitar, bass, drums) and the advantages and challenges of working within it. From pre-arranging to on-the-spot orchestration are at the heart of this exciting concept. The use of texture, space, and dynamics are analyzed, enabling each player to create a complete musical statement while remaining open to new possibilities within each tune that they play.

Introductions, transitions, set-ups for soloist changes, and endings are some of the important subject matter covered.
